Sesame Street Introduces Muppet to Teach Kids About Homelessness

Sesame Street is all about education, so it makes sense that they’d want to teach kids about homelessness.

Sesame Workshop, the show’s nonprofit entity, is announcing that one of the show’s muppets was getting a new storyline. Lily, a 7-year-old muppet, will experience homelessness. Previously, Lily’s character had experienced food insecurity, when her character was introduced seven years ago.

Sesame Workshop believes the new storyline will help teach kids about the rising problem in America. It may even help children affected, cope with the situation. “We want them to know that they are not alone and home is more than a house or an apartment — home is wherever the love lives,” Sherrie Westin, Sesame Workshop’s president of global impact, said in a press release.

Lily won’t appear on the actual show. Instead, she’ll appear in YouTube videos, books, and other learning materials used to educate.
