The fun-filled ComplexCon 2024 panel included Snoop Dogg, who brought his feelings on how the performers are chosen for the Super Bowl Halftime Show he was a part of when he and Dr. Dre appeared on a live episode of Drink Champs hosted by N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN. The discussion went from minute details to very broad subjects about choosing performers for one of the biggest stages in the world.
Snoop Dogg didn’t hold back his praise for Jay-Z, who became the NFL’s live music entertainment strategist. Snoop credited Jay-Z with a monumental shift to bring hip-hop artists to the Super Bowl: “Before Jay took the keys, there were no Black artists on that stage. He created this wave where the artists get to shine. If you got the talent, your time’s gonna come.”
The conversation also extended to the recent controversy of Lil Wayne’s disappointment in not having been selected to perform at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Snoop emphasized that they needed to show patience and unity within the hip-hop community. “It’s your fault if you aren’t selected; don’t blame nobody else,” said Snoop. “Hip-hop is winning; that’s what it’s all about.”
Snoop recalled his spectacular performance during Super Bowl LVI alongside greats such as Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. “It was a privilege to be there, representing hip-hop,” he said. “We should celebrate our genre’s recognition rather than envy who’s on stage.
It then shifted to new exciting ventures, as Snoop and Dr. Dre shared some behind-the-scenes information about their upcoming album, “Missionary,” which will drop on December 13, 2024.
It could be considered their first full collaboration in over three decades since taking to the music industry with a gangsta rap-themed album entitled “Doggystyle.” He also dropped hints that fans can get a sound that has matured them as artists.
Injecting some humor into the conversation, Snoop regaled them with a laugh-out-loud story regarding Stevie Wonder FaceTiming him out of the blue.
“For real, Stevie FaceTimed me,” Snoop laughed, turning it into a joke. “I was getting my hair done, and my stylist was like, ‘Did that just say Stevie Wonder?’ So I answered it, and Stevie was like, ‘Man, I’ve been looking for you!” The on-air audience erupted once more, as if Snoop had proved his sublime aptitude as a storyteller.
Snoop reflected on his glittering career and the giants who have helped mold it. “I’ve been fortunate to work with legends and trendsetters in this business,” he said. “It’s been an incredible ride, and I’m grateful for every moment.
Snoop and Dre just dusted off their latest project: Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop, a nod to a decades-long friendship. Teaming with Drink Champs, the two launched the brand at this year’s ComplexCon and received nothing but enthusiasm from fans.
As Snoop said, “This ain’t just about a drink; it’s all about enjoying music, friendship, and good times.
As Snoop would reiterate throughout the night, the one ultimate important thing in hip-hop is unity. He encouraged the artists to stick together and appreciate the success of their combined effort.
”Instead of tearing each other down, let’s lift each other up,” Snoop declared. “Hip-hop is winning, and we’ve got to keep that energy alive. One lively discussion at ComplexCon not only highlighted the behind-the-scenes intricacies of the Super Bowl Halftime Show but also gave great attention to the unity and patience that has been relevantly significant in the hip-hop world.
However, Snoop Dogg’s candid insight combined with his infectious charisma for what was truly an unforgettable session by a sea of inspired fans of his transcendental dedication to the legacy and future of hip-hop.ng dedication to hip-hop’s legacy and future.
