A suspect in the murder of rising rapper Pop Smoke, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, has plead guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter and another for home invasion robbery. This young man, who was 17 at the time of the murder, is now serving a four-year sentence in a juvenile facility for his part in the killing.
What’s more, he’s now been arrested again for allegedly vandalizing Pop Smoke’s gravesite at Brooklyn’s Greenwood Cemetary this past Saturday morning (April 6). As we previously reported, the suspect was reportedly trying to pull out the rapper’s casket during the vandalism.
This case is a reminder that hip-hop fans should never take for granted their right to justice, especially when it comes to young artists who die too early in their careers. Unfortunately, the justice system can sometimes take a while to get things done.
Last week, new details about Pop Smoke’s death emerged in court, during two days of proceedings to determine whether the case against defendant Corey Walker would go to trial.
The key takeaways from that hearing
First, prosecutors said that a suspect who was only 15 at the time of the murder had been at Pop Smoke’s rental to steal his diamond-encrusted Rolex and Cuban link chain. According to TMZ, police arrested the teenager along with three other people who were involved in the murder of the rapper.
During the two-day hearing, prosecutors presented a witness who allegedly spoke with the teen, who described how he and his friends contacted Pop Smoke while they were at his house. They were there to rob him, the informant alleged, and he “admitted that they asked for the jewelry” and that they had a confrontation with Pop Smoke before shooting him.
After the incident, one of the teen’s companions called 911 and gave investigators the names of all five men. She said that the robbers entered the house with weapons and pushed the door open. The victim was in the bathroom when they arrived, according to Camacho. He was hit in the chest and pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the news outlet reports.
Next, investigators found a car that matches the description of the one that drove into the home with the teen’s friends. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of the rented house where the murder happened, police said. It is not known if the car belonged to Corey Walker or not, but it is possible that he could have been driving the car when it entered the home.
