Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach, has allowed Antonio Brown, the receiver, to make a comeback, disregarding the recent controversy surrounding his COVID-19 vaccine card. Despite Arians’ own comments last year in reference to Brown’s antics, “ If he screws up one time, he’s done.”
Many questions, what changed from then until now for Arians to change his mind in such a manner. The latest injuries the Buccaneers suffered on top of their disappointing showing against the New Orleans Saints. It’s safe to say, they’re going to need all the help they can get. Especially, after losing two of their offensive weapons for the season last week, Chris Godwin and Leonard Fournette.
“The situation has evolved since then,” Arians remarked. “There were many positive developments last year that made me proud of him. I made a decision that was in the best interest of our football team.”
Antonio Brown’s history of scandals
An NFL investigation found that Brown and Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards turned in fake vaccination cards. This is a direct violation of the NFL rules, not to mention, a federal crime. Each was suspended for three games, the last of the suspension was after this past Sunday. Many believed, he proved himself last year that he can a “model citizen”. Brown embraced the team culture and was focused under Tom Brady’s supervision. He showed maximum effort each day and supported his teammates.
Although, he proved he can be a good teammate and law-abiding citizen last year doesn’t erase his past scandals. Brown struggled with off-the-field stuff for some time now. He had felony probation stemming from the assault of a South Florida moving truck driver in January 2020. In June of the following year, he settled a civil lawsuit with his former trainer Britney Taylor, who accused him of sexual assault. These don’t include the incident that took place last month with Steven Ruiz, his former chef, accusing Brown of the use of fake vaccination cards, according to ESPN.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ reasoning for bringing back Brown
Many were curious as to why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers considered Brown to come back in the lineup after Arians put his foot down the previous year with a zero-tolerance policy of nonsense. However, it seems he’s gone back on his word. Arians mention that he has the team’s best interest and this is bigger than any one person’s ego. Not to mention, the lack of stars they have due to injuries he will be embraced with open arms by Brady to help this offense be more explosive.
“I could give a s— what they think. The only thing I care about is this football team … and what’s best for us,” Arians said.
