What makes a Superbowl? There are three components — the game, the halftime performance, and the ads. Millions upon millions gather around their televisions every year to watch the biggest game of the season, anticipating who the winner will be, what halftime slip-ups will occur and most exciting (to the football-illiterates)—the commercials!
This is possibly the only day of the year that Americans are willing to watch ads voluntarily. The cost of a 30-second Superbowl commercial in 2020 is around $5.6 million. Companies prepare all year for their moment to grab the attention of the world and leave their mark.
Fans voted for their favourite ads via admeter.usatoday.com from Jan. 29, until the end of game night at 1 a.m. and the results are in…
#1. Jeep’s ‘Groundhog Day’
The ad for Jeep’s new Gladiator featured a nostalgic Bill Murray portraying the plot for the 1993 film Groundhog Day. Instead of cruising in a Chevrolet pickup truck, Murray struts in Jeeps new ‘Gladiator’ truck.
#2. Hyundai’s ‘Smaht Pahk’
The second runner up was Hyundai’s commercial for their new smart park feature. John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, Chris Evans and retired Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz starred in the ad speaking in hilariously-obnoxious Boston accents. All-in-all the smart park feature seemed pretty cool…but that doesn’t mean I’m willing to be one of the guinea pigs.
#3. Google’s Loretta
Google’s not usually used to taking home bronze medals, but hey, they’re still in the top three. This one really hurt. We see an ageing man leaning on a Google robot to help him remember his late wife. Sad and kinda creepy, but we get the point and nonetheless, it drove emotion. So, well deserved, Google.
#4. Doritos: The Cool Ranch
AMAZING. What’s better than Lil Nas X and a good pun.
#5. Rocket Mortgage’s Comfortable ft. Jason Momoa
We’ve definitely never seen Jason Momoa like this before, and it certainly got everyone’s attention!
If we can’t all agree on who deserved to win the game, at least we can all laugh together at the ads.
What’d did you think about this year’s Superbowl? What was your favourite commercial?
