From TikTok Star to Killer: A Descent into Jealousy and Violence
A California jury on Friday found former TikTok star, Ali Abulaban, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, ending a senseless four-day trial that had the nation on the edge of their seats. Regardless of Molly’s mental state, the case highlights a shadowy side to the world of the social-media celebrity, where the suggestion of a bright, happy life was torn apart by what, police say, was jealousy, leading to the deaths of Abulaban’s estranged wife Ana and her friend Rayburn Barron.
Ali Abulaban, a one-time “rising star” known for his prank videos on Tiktok, counted nearly a million followers. Some essentially lethal combination of doubt and fury seems to have led them to kill. Certain that she must have been cheating, Ali carried out a frightening action. He’d secretly planted a listening device on their 5-year-old daughter’s iPad — a despicable betrayal of trust, using his wife as an unwilling spy. This shady move and Ana’s conversation with Rayburn only made Ali more of a jealous coward.
On a fateful October day in 2021, Ali’s rage reached a boiling point. Armed and fueled by unfounded accusations, he stormed into the apartment. In a scene of unimaginable violence, Ali gunned down Barron three times before turning his weapon on Ana, ending her life with a blow to the head.

That photo, along with other evidence, was the backbone of the prosecution’s case. Prosecutors said the trial was a window into the relationship between the couple. Ali went to the stand and confessed to the killings; the evidence was stacked against him. The jury, faced with a panoply of evidence and a prosecutor’s picture of a man drowning in jealousy and rage, took all of half an hour to reach a verdict. Wednesday sentenced, Ali Abulaban has the possibility of life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder.
