Tina Knowles Reveals Beyoncé’s Childhood Bullying

Life Before the Stage Lights: An Insight into Beyoncé’s Childhood and the Values That Molded Her

We never see this side of Beyoncé but during a rare behind the scenes moment, mommie dearest let just a lil too much slip in her latest interview with Vogue. Although the superstar is known for her fierce stage presence and undeniable talents, her mother painted a picture of a young Beyoncé who — like many others before her — was hurt by bullying.

The great crack in the shy armor of the Beyoncé persona came at what Tina labeled a defining moment in her daughter’s childhood. Tina recalled an occasion when 9-year-old Beyoncé stood up to a bully. Instead of quietly running back into the withdrawn child’s shell, Beyoncé made a play that her mother would never forget.

We all just had a really nice moment — as mothers, to see Beyoncé standing up for somebody else even though it was in defense of herself. “Wow, that was so special,” she continued to gush, choking back tears. It was a brave move on her part that showed Tina had raised daughters in the values she instilled upon them.

The interview went on to highlight the distinctive characteristics of each of Tina’s daughters. It started with Solange, the younger sister of Beyoncé, who was one hell of an activist from her elementary school years. According to Tina’s narration, this gives the image of a girl child who was out to create a difference, a spirit that still lives on up to today through the works of Solange. A third daughter to Tina, Kelly Rowland was known to play very pivotal roles in the family. Being a very nurturing person by nature, she brings about harmony anywhere around her and assures safety and love. In Tina’s stories, one can understand well the deep bond they share and the important position of Kelly as one of the bulwarks of their family.

As for Tina, parenting was the philosophy based on recognition and celebration of the uniqueness of the child: a positive and empowering environment for empathy, activism, and protection. Certainly, it influenced the daughters, so they are what they are now.

That one moment of courage was not a fleeting incident but one that defined the values the mum had instilled in her. “That day, I saw a glimpse of the incredible woman Beyoncé would become,” Tina said. “Her courage and empathy continue to inspire me every day.”

As Tina reminiscence, it would be evident that such values resonate from deep within their home. In their own way, Beyoncé, Solange, and Kelly Rowland reflect this; a great tribute to a mother who encouraged nothing but understanding and respect for oneself.

It is a heartfelt interview in that it reveals the early life of Beyoncé, her family, and the strong ties that have very much molded her and her sisters into the powerful and inspiring women that they are today.
