Turkish Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in NYC After Pilot Dies Mid-Air

At 5:00 a.m. on October 9, 2024, Turkish Airlines flight TK204, flying from New York City to Istanbul, faced an in-flight emergency. Just four hours into its journey, at that time, the captain of the flight, Ilcehin Pehlivan, age 59 years, collapsed in the cockpit; the plane was diverted for an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

As the Airbus A350-900 flew high above the clouds on cruise, the passengers were probably settling into a rhythm when the unthinkable happened. At just about 6 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, this would have been the moment when the passengers heard the flight crew call out for assistance. In the chaotic scene that ensued, here came crew members rushing to provide aid to Captain Pehlivan as he lost consciousness mid-flight. It was an urgent feeling in the air as other flight attendants were doing their best to administer some medical help while trying to keep the passengers as calm and updated as possible.

Despite attempting to resuscitate him, Captain Pehlivan could not be revived before the aircraft landed safely at JFK. Thankfully, owing to quick thinking on behalf of the co-pilot and a relief pilot later taking control of the aircraft, the landing was conducted without injury to the passengers aboard. The plane touched down just before 6 a.m. at JFK-a blunt reminder of the capriciousness of life in the skies.

Captain Ilcehin Pehlivan was an experienced Turkish Airlines professional hired in 2007. His colleagues all described him as a very seasoned professional who, in March 2024, was given a pre-flight medical check, which he passed without any problems regarding his health. His death was later declared to be due to a heart attack-a very sudden change of events.

On behalf of this tragic incident, Turkish Airlines extended their deepest condolences to the family of Captain Pehlivan. The airline has expressed that it is taking every measure to support the grieving family in this incredibly difficult time. Arrangements were made by them for passengers to continue their journey to Istanbul from New York with minimal disruption.

This incident poignantly underlines how much aviation safety depends upon well-trained co-pilots and emergency protocols. The dignity of the composure of the flight crew, pressured flight attendants included, was key to a safe landing in that tragic situation. It really does show just how much preparation and training can make quite a big difference when events catch one off guard.

As the passengers disembarked from Flight TK204, many were likely reflective about the fragility of life and what a brilliant example of professionalism the flight crew showed. This incident underlines safety and the human element in keeping passengers safe in today’s world, where flying is more often than not a matter of course.
