Wally Amos, Famous Amos Founder, Passes Away at 88

Wally Amos is an extroverted entrepreneur: he built a famous brand out of a simple family cookie recipe. Known by his trademark Panama hat, constant kazoo at his side, and endless optimism, the story of Wally and his cookies makes up what critics describe as an irreducibly American success story intertwined with the pitfalls of keeping that success.

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, early life was characterized by a very big love for baking, which he took with him to Los Angeles. It was in 1975 when he opened the first outlet of Famous Amos cookies on Sunset Boulevard. The store became an overnight sensation, with cookies that captured both hearts and recommendations for taste buds everywhere in Los Angeles. It was something a lot more than a cookie store; it had grown into a cultural hub and a destination for celebs and common folks. The only thing that seemed to be going for it all was the break that Amos had, with his love of baking and his undeniable charisma, to make every foray into the store warm and delightful personal experiences.

Wally Amos would say very often that his business was this not only about generating revenue. “I didn’t start Famous Amos to make a fortune,” he said once. “I started it because I loved baking, and I loved making people happy.” This philosophy was ingrained into every single facet of what he did with his business, setting him apart as an entrepreneur profoundly genuine about his concern for the community.

The road, however, wasn’t always sweet. After the gigantic success for the first time, financial troubles started knocking on his doors. This was when Amos sold the brand Famous Amos during the late 1980s. This marked a turn in events as eventually Amos lost the rights to his name and has since been struggling to gain a foothold yet again.

Even long after he parted ways with the brand, Wally Amos remained a cultural icon. His story denuded into a beacon of the hope for many in the face of adversity. For the past many years, the Famous Amos brand has been owned by Ferrero, which, in fact itself admits to the great legacy left by Amos. Even when the ownership changed hands, the spirit behind the brand still remained attached with the man who put it all to motion. Ferrero continues to celebrate Amos, ensuring his groundbreaking work in cookies is never forgotten.
