In the past, the public was aware of prospective team names. However, some team personnel said that wasn’t an official list. Snyder spoke about it in a great deal on Schefter’s podcast.
“Yes,” Wright wrote on the team website, acknowledging that Wolves and RedWolves were popular choices among fans. However, due to trademark concerns held by other teams, those options were not feasible.
“We wanted to avoid potential legal challenges,” stated Wright in his President’s Brief. “We didn’t want our fans to endure years of legal battles as they embrace our new brand.”
The reasons for the rebranding of the Washington Football Team
In July 2020, the Washington Football Team announced its decision to change its mascot name, which had been in use since 1932, due to its offensive nature. Following protests, discussions, and pressure from sponsors in the spring of 2020, the team started considering a rebrand.
In an episode of “Making the Brand” on the team’s website, senior adviser Doug Williams, who has been involved with the team as both a player and executive for 11 years, shared his perspective, saying, “We’re making progress as we move forward, and that’s what the rebrand represents.” He expressed excitement about seeing the team on the field and the fans in the stands embracing the rebrand. He also highlighted the simplicity and cleanliness of the new uniform design, emphasizing that it will look great. While the president of the team doesn’t believe the team name is a fan favorite, the general manager Martin Mayhew has a different approach. He believes many of the fans will enjoy the new design and uniforms of the Washington Football Team.
“They look clean and sharp. They have a cool vibe, so I’m confident that fans will be really excited about the fresh look of the new uniforms.”
“While we knew it would be challenging to find a name that every single fan would agree with as their top choice,” wrote Wright, “we’re thrilled with our final selection. It reflects our values, pays tribute to our history, represents the region, and, above all, draws inspiration from and is shaped by our fans.”
