Willow Smith’s New Sound
Willow Smith’s new sound is very alternative, funk and punk. The sound and song were during quarentine. Travis Barker gets a feature on drums. So why the style change? Most talented artists like experiment and Willow is no different. The singer who popularized “Whip My Hair” shared, “That song made me realize I needed to embrace my confidence and release any doubts I had about creating music in this genre.” Personally, I think the style and genre fits well for Willow Smith and I am interested to hear more of her work in this style.
Willow’s Smith’s New Image is Edgier
Willow can be seen wearing an all-black attire, including large combat boots, a studded belt and a chained collar necklace. Both her attire and her video frames feel very reminicient of Janet Jackson in ‘Scream’ and TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’. She stretches her body into wide angles and above camera shots that scream 90’s with a bit of today’s edge.
‘Transparent Soul,’ What Does It Mean?
Her lyrics are full of spite, spying ingenuity, and saying, “I see you.” Here’s an alternative: “I’ve met someone like you before / A deceptive individual / Pretending to be someone else / But I see through the lies.”
The singer explained to Rolling Stone, “I thought it was a cool way to introduce a fresh vibe to my music.” Smith also mentioned that the song was inspired by a Hindu saying. “According to this belief, a saintly person is as pure as a spotless mirror. When we encounter such a soul, we can see both the beauty and flaws within ourselves.”
Smith’s next album is set to be released this summer.
