YG Claps Back at Drake’s “Family Matters” Diss on New Track “Weird”

The rap world is buzzing with speculation after YG dropped his new single “Weird.” Fans are scrambling to decipher the meaning behind some of the lyrics, particularly the line: “When it’s smoke, don’t ever mention my name.” Many are connecting this to a recent shoutout YG received on Drake’s track “Family Matters.”

The chiding on Drake’s “Family Matters” was accepted as a friendly, playful ribbing—two artists who have worked together many times in the past. But YG’s response on “Weird” seems to tip us off; he’s really not into being name-dropped, even for a gag. Drake said, “YG ain’t got the juice like that,” and this is the line: “When it’s smoke, don’t ever mention my name.”

The ambiguity of the words by YG in “Weird” allows many interpretations. Some were saying that it was a clap back at Drake; others thought that it was just a general comment about staying out of struggle. Anyway, the released joint has fans making assumptions about a ramified beef.

YG and Drake haven’t exactly been strangers to working together, anyway. Cuts like 2013’s “Who Do You Love?” have implied a kind of cordiality. But it seems like maybe there’s more to that story or, at least, hints of other things.

The two’s relationship has resurfaced with YG’s recent track “Weird”. According to YG, “Weird” is not a diss track—it was written way before “Family Matters” dropped, anyway. Still, fans and critics are continuing to speculate over the appearance of the track. Those from the lyrics of “Weird” no doubt are without conspicuous allusions or callbacks towards the content or themes within Family Matters,” and for this very reason people believe that the whole connection is more based on speculation and less on some sort of substance.

But underneath all of that, one should not forget the humanity in it all. YG has declared his current favorite on social media: Kendrick Lamar and DJ Mustard’s “Not Like Us” is one of the best songs this year. “Family Matters” by Drake talks about his personal issues pertaining to his life with his son Adonis and relationship with his father.

All in all, great minds think alike – Artists like YG and Drake are continuously boundary-pushing, challenging each other with tough lyrics suited well for their fan base. Whether “Weird” was a response to “Family Matters” doesn’t really matter. One thing’s for sure: YG never was one to keep his mouth shut, and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
